Spaces of Joy Week 9: Jess Thom

Jess Thom is co-artistic director of Touretteshero and may or may not lead a secret double life as a superhero. Artist, writer, and activist, Jess co-founded Touretteshero in 2010. She’s had tics since she was a child but wasn’t diagnosed with Tourettes until her mid-twenties. With encouragement from her friends, Jess turned her tics into a source of imaginative creativity and Touretteshero was born.

Jess Thom led a session exploring emerging access practices that support artists and audiences at higher risk from COVID-19 .


The session covered practical tools and ideas for supporting chronically ill artists and discussion of how elements of non-physical participation can be incorporated with creativity, imagination, and flair.

We will discussed how the cultural landscape has changed dramatically since the start of the pandemic and what action can be taken to ensure that disabled artists, staff and audiences can continue to connect with and shape cultural practice.
